Meet Dr. Camelio!

Dr. Kari Camelio grew up in central California, also known as ‘cowboy country’, surrounded by farms, orchards, dogs, and horses. This early environment developed Dr. Camelio’s deep connection to animals. Moving to Los Angeles as a young adult, Dr. Camelio worked as a veterinary technician and volunteered at the renowned Wildlife Way Station where she encountered every type of wild and exotic animal. She continued her education by obtaining her Bachelor of Science in marine biology at UCLA and then went on to veterinary school at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She has a passion for soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and dentistry, but what truly brings her joy is building trusting, heartfelt connections with her furry patients and their humans.

In her free time, Dr. Camelio enjoys the outdoors and recreational activities such as kayaking, golf, pickleball, hiking, skiing, and swimming. She has relocated from California to Maine, specifically to enjoy all that ‘vacationland’ has to offer, including four, actual seasons. Dr. Camelio plans to explore the state with her partner and her two dogs and hopefully see a moose for the very, first time.

RECOVER Initiative

At Piscataqua Animal Hospital, we take patient care very seriously and are always looking for ways to improve our skills and continue our education. Our team recently participated in the RECOVER Initiative.

RECOVER is evidence based canine and feline CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) guidelines. RECOVER certification is broken up into Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). BLS focuses on recognizing Cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), responding to CPA, providing high quality chest compressions, mouth to snout and intubated ventilation, and the CPR 2-minute cycle.

ALS focuses on continuing the RECOVER CPR algorithm, including monitoring equipment (ECG & ETCO2), diagnosing ECG arrest rhythm and shockable rhythms, defibrillation, and drug therapies. RECOVER certification includes an online course going over the evidence-based guidelines and an in-person simulation training. The simulation training includes use of simulation software and CPR mannequin teams of 4-6 people, working together on 2-3 simulation cases. The in-person training includes training on feedback and closed-loop communication and ends with a mega-code simulation test case. Upon completion of this training, we are very proud to announce that twelve of our team members are now certified! Be sure to check out our training photo gallery below!
